Homeopathy is one of the latest natural healing trends. The Society of Homeopaths defines homeopathy as “a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which triggers the body’s natural system of healing. Based on their experience of their symptoms, a homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient.”
Homeopathy operates on the principle of “like cures like”. A totality of symptoms must be gathered from the patient, including physical, emotion, and mental symptoms. It is only then that the remedy that best matches the symptom picture is looked for. Homeopathy doctors will then match the symptoms that are caused in healthy patients by a particular substance. Once that substance is found, it follows that it has the best chance of producing a curative response. Simply put, the “Law of Similars” goes on the theory that the substance that would cause specific symptoms in someone with good health is used to cure those same, specific symptoms in someone with poor health.
But how do homeopaths discover which remedies work for various symptoms and illnesses?
There are three different ways that the medicines are found:
1. Toxicity symptoms (such as diarrhea and vomiting caused by various poisons or toxins)
2. The “signature” of the medicine. This is an ancient medical theory that’s based on the characteristics of various substances. The Society of Homeopaths gives the example of deadly nightshade’s large black berries resembling dilated pupils during high fever.
3. Proving the effectiveness of a substance. This involves testing the substance on a group of healthy participants who then record all of their symptoms. When there is an agreement of symptoms, this remedy is recorded and used in future cases.
Once the remedy is found, it is given to the patient in the least amount possible. This limits the possible side effects and increases the remedy’s gentle actions so that the patient can be cured.
While it’s something that can take a while to understand, it’s clear that the forces behind homeopathy are doing something right: it definitely works!
